Community / Gulberwick kirk goes on the market

THE GULBERWICK kirk has become the latest church in Shetland to go on the market.

The Church of Scotland is inviting offers over £54,999 for the C-listed property.

The church held its last service in March after more than 120 years of worship.

The Church of Scotland said the Gulberwick kirk, which has an internal area of 90 square metres, enjoys “truly stunning coastal views”.

As with some other churches which have gone on sale recently, the building sits next to a graveyard which is maintained by the council.

The Church of Scotland agreed in 2018 to close 20 of its 31 buildings in Shetland as falling congregations made the retention of many buildings unviable.

Many have already been disposed of in locations around Shetland, with some going into community ownership.
