Community / Community marks Holocaust Memorial Day
WREATHS will be laid as part of a ceremony at the war memorial at Lerwick Town Hall this morning (Friday) to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
The annual commemoration is organised by Shetland Inter Faith, with the support of the Lerwick branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, the islands’ council and a number of local residents.
This year the ceremony focuses on the fragility of freedom, with council convener Andrea Manson, Lord Lieutenant Bobby Hunter, the Lerwick branch of the Royal British legion and pupils from the Bell’s Brae Primary School in attendance.
David Marsh of Shetland Inter Faith said: “It is now 30 years since the genocide against the Tutsi people in Rwanda – but there have been other genocides since then, many people around the world still face restrictions to their freedoms to live, worship, work and love freely.
“All are welcome to attend, as we come together to learn more about the past, bear witness for those who endured genocide, honour the survivors and all those whose lives were changed beyond recognition, and take action to create a safer future.”
The Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration takes place from 11am at the town hall.
