Community / Next Relay for Life to finish at midnight in bid to make fundraising event more accessible

THE NEXT Relay for Life fundraising event is set to take place during the day rather than through the night as it has done previously.

The next relay, which raises money for Cancer Research UK, will take place at the Clickimin in Lerwick on Saturday 25 May 2024.

However, it will run from midday to midnight in a bid to make the event, which sees teams of fundraisers walk around the Clickimin track, more accessible.

Previously it has run through the night, with last event in 2022 going from 8pm to 8am.

All the key elements of previous relays will continue, from the survivors being the guests of honour and walking the opening lap to the stalls, family entertainment and music.

Shetland Relay for Life chair Kerry Llewellyn said: “The committee and I are so excited about the potential of this year’s relay, from more people being able to take part to the wrap around activity that makes this the Relay such a successful and important event in Shetland.

“The survivors are always an important part of relay and we will continue to celebrate them and their stories with a reception and the opening lap.”

Survivors are encouraged to keep their eyes on the Shetland Relay for Life Facebook page and the press for announcements over the next couple of weeks on how to sign up.

Teams can sign up now at the Relay for Life Shetland page on the CRUK website.

Llewellyn added: “Since 2006 our wonderful community has raised over £1.5million pounds for Cancer Research, what are you going to do this year to add to that phenomenal total?”
