Community / Lifeboat crew’s festive navigation exercise

THE LERWICK Lifeboat crew has again entered the festive spirit by mapping out an outline of a Christmas tree while on a navigation exercise at sea.

The crew carried out the task earlier today (Saturday) east of Quarff and Fladdabister.

The crew often map out the tree outline every Christmas, and the result can be seen on vessel tracking websites.

RNLI Lerwick said on Facebook that the ‘tree’ this year was 2.8 nautical miles in height.

The station added: “Our volunteer crew train year round to keep up their essential rescue skills for whenever we’re asked to launch.

“Today’s exercise, including 34 waypoints, has been a test of their navigation, search planning and boat handling skills.

“We rely on your donations and fundraising to help us save lives at sea.”
