Community / Fundraiser aims to walk, run, cycle or swim 5K every day in December
GETTING out and about and active in December might be a struggle for many, from the dark evenings to the Christmas indulgence.
But one Shetlander is looking to carry out a ‘5k’ every day this month in aid of a charity close to her heart.
Imogen Young aims to walk, run, cycle or swim 5K every day to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
This also includes Christmas Day itself – although the 24-year-old says that will be “completed before dinner, that’s for sure”.
Speaking about the challenge, she said: “The initial idea was to try and do 5K each day for my own health and wellbeing.
“Getting out and about and staying active during December is usually quite a difficult task for me personally due to the weather, low-mood and lack of motivation.
“I really wanted to hold myself accountable to push myself and keep going.
“I could think of no better way to do this than by raising money for such a wonderful charity. This charity is very close to my heart – and to many others in the Shetland community.
“I want to do my part in raising money and help them continue providing amazing care and support to young people going through cancer treatment.
“It would be great to end a very difficult year with some positivity and a feeling of achievement.”
Young said the weather will probably pose the biggest challenge, but she is determined to get out whatever the elements may bring.
The second most challenging part will be running, she added.
“I am not a very good runner but I’m determined to get better and challenge myself,” the fundraiser said. “I enjoy long walks and cycling.”
Armed with a donations bucket, she is also hoping to bump into a few merry people on New Year’s Eve that would be happy to donate to the cause.
Young said she is on her feet a lot at work and usually accumulate around 4K from that alone, but she would like to do the 5K on top of that.
She also encouraged anyone looking for a challenge this December to also participate.
