Transport / North Isles tunnels funding push continues
THE GROUPS campaigning for tunnels for Unst and Yell are now looking for businesses with interests in the North Isles to consider donating.
The two tunnel action groups need to raise £200,000 for initial studies in areas like geological conditions, engineering feasibility and environmental impact, and more than £140,000 has been secured so far through both business and public donations.
Speaking on behalf of the Yell and Unst tunnel action groups, Gordon Thomson said the campaign is keen to hear from individuals and businesses who have work in the North Isles.
“While finance is obviously the priority, we would also very much welcome any other form of support you may be able to provide. This may take different forms – messages of support, spreading the word, contributing to the planning and strategies, work in kind,” he added.
“We hope that you agree that unrestricted travel will be so much more efficient, cost-effective, socially beneficial, and environmentally friendly.”
He said the impact on businesses from the council’s ageing ferry fleet “in terms of cost and time is already evident and will steadily increase”.
“The status quo poses real threats to the wellbeing and vitality of our communities,” Thomson said.
