Community / Delting jarl’s first proper haircut in years – all for a good cause

Dwayne Davies before the cut - and after.

IT IS certainly feeling colder up north for Delting Up Helly Aa jarl Dwayne Davies after having his lengthy locks cut off for charity at the weekend.

After some eight years, and only a few trims of the ends, he had his hair lopped off in full at the Voe Show on Saturday.

His hair is being donated to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which provides real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other conditions.

More than £2,400 was also raised in total for the trust and local charity Mind Your Head by the Delting Up Aa squad over recent months, including through a fundraising weightlifting session.

“I’m delighted with the total raised,” Davies said. “Given how tight folks purse strings have been post-Covid, I would say it’s been a success.”

Davies’ post-Up Helly Aa haircut has been delayed numerous times; he was set to lead the Delting event in 2020 but it was called off due to the Covid pandemic.

He kept his hair long whilst 2021 and 2022 also fell foul of the pandemic, before finally having his big day earlier this year.

Davies admitted it naturally feels a bit odd having no hair on top – but it is “nice to do stuff outside and it not waft in your face”.

With a couple more squad events to attend the lengthy beard is staying for now, although it is due to get a trim in the coming weeks.
