Education / College success for care skills students – while UHI seeks ‘Northern’ views

A COLLABORATIVE course between UHI Shetland and the SIC has been hailed as a success this week as students completed the first Care Skills Academy.

They students began the ten-week course in March this year.

It aims to support those who want to work in Shetland’s health and social care sector.

Students learned a range of skills from those with experience in the industry.

They also took part in work experience placements in the second half of the course.

Shetland Islands Council has guaranteed interviews for everyone that completed the academy successfully.

Graduating student Cameron Ritchie said: “The work experience with supported living and outreach was amazing – it was fun and rewarding and really opened my eyes to how important this work is.

“It has confirmed to me that this is the kind of work I want to do.  I really want to help support people to live their lives to the fullest.”

Susan Menary, head of health, care and society at UHI Shetland, said: “We are delighted that how well the course has gone, and we wish our learners every success working in health and social care.”

Additionally, the UHI is seeking input from anyone residing in the North Isles or the North Mainland of Shetland.

The learning survey has been launched to get feedback on which courses or types of learning people in Shetland would like to see at learning centres and the main UHI campuses.

The survey can be found here and will close on 31 July.
