Arts / Rapper Stormzy references ‘the Shetlands’ in new song

SHETLAND has received a mention in a rather unusual place – in the lyrics of a new song by chart-topping rapper Stormzy.

His track Longevity Flow states that he “could’ve been an engineer in the Shetlands”.

Before he achieved worldwide success with hit singles like Vossi Bop, the Londoner worked at an oil refinery in Southampton.

In an interview with the BBC in 2015, Stormzy revealed he used to work in quality assurance at the refinery.

As his music began to pick up attention in spring 2014, he decided to quit his job.

The song speculates about the route his life could have taken if his music career was unsuccessful – instead his job in the oil and gas industry could have brought him to Shetland.

The music video for Longevity Flow was released on Monday and already has over 500,000 views on YouTube.

The video also features Top Gun actor Tom Cruise and F1 driver Lewis Hamilton.
