Letters / Deafening noise
I was very amused to read Brian Nugent’s tribute to Winnie Ewing as staunch advocate of Scottish independence.
In 1983 Ewing stood for Orkney and Shetland. She didn’t utter a word about independence during her campaign.
What she did do was drive around Lerwick with her husband and a loudhailer instructing folk to ‘Vote Ewing!’
They made a deafening noise, which undoubtedly cost them many votes.
Eventually, based in the Labour Party rooms, I phoned the police, posing as a young woman with sleepless infants. The police acted immediately. No more was heard from the loudhailer.
