A UHI member of staff has been recognised at a national awards ceremony as “a quiet, understated champion of aquaculture”.

Dr Lesley McEvoy is an aquaculture scientist and instructor at the Scalloway campus.

She was the winner of the Unsung Hero category at the awards in Inverness last night (Thursday).

The judges said they were “unanimous” in wanting to recognise her outstanding contribution to the industry over many decades

She was described as having “supported the industry tirelessly”.

Senior lecturer for aquaculture at UHI Shetland Stuart Fitzsimmons said: “Lesley has been an inspiration to many staff and students and has always been committed and passionate about aquaculture.  She thoroughly deserves this accolade.”

UHI Shetland principal Professor Jane Lewis, Principal and CEO of UHI Shetland added: “A very well done to Lesley on her achievement at the Aquaculture Awards.

“This award is well deserved and we are grateful to Lesley for all of the hard work and dedication she has shown to students over her many years working in aquaculture.”

McEvoy is set to retire from the college this year.
