Arts / ‘Dare to be different’ – Voe soft play centre hosts art exhibition

Two colorful paintings side by side: the left features a woman with dark hair, surrounded by flowers and birds; the right shows a person with braided hair, wearing a floral shirt, amid butterflies and vibrant colors.

THE VOE Centre is hosting an art exhibition during the Easter holidays which will open today (Saturday).

This is us … and we dare to be different is a collection of artwork created by participants of the Ability Shetland North Mainland adult social group.

Guided by Northmavine based artist Alex Purbrick, the participants were encouraged to explore their thoughts of how they would portray themselves and their inner world through collage, drawing, painting, words and creative writing.

“I invited the group to think about how they wanted to depict their true self through a creative medium and everyone has produced fantastic pieces ranging from poetry to abstract painting to collage,” Purbrick said.

“The aim of the project was to highlight the creative talent of all the folk who attend the group, and hopefully help them feel confident in showcasing their work to the community.”

She welcomed the opportunity to exhibit the artwork in the former Olnafirth Primary School as this was close to where the Ability Shetland group was based.

The Voe Centre is a family run business which is home to Shetland’s first soft play facility and a café.

Ability Shetland’s North Mainland adult club caters for adults who have barriers to social opportunities. The group meet fortnightly, often at the Mossbank Hall.

Part of the charity’s ethos is to tackle loneliness and social exclusion, which often results from disability and someone experiencing poor mental health.

The exhibition in the Voe Centre can be viewed during opening hours from 9.30pm to 4pm during the Easter holidays.
