Court / Court round up 15 March 2023
A YOUNG man from Lerwick who breached his bail conditions on the same day they were imposed and then went on to assault police officers several times had his sentence adjourned for reports.
Cory Williamson admitted four charges, all committed on 27 January, when he appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
Apart from breaching bail conditions by being in the company of the complainer in a previous case that was still pending, the 21-year-old also pleaded guilty to threatening or abusive behaviour in a police vehicle and assaulting two police officers in two separate incidents.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said Williamson aimed to kick a female officer and very narrowly missed her head, adding that had he hit her the assault would have resulted in a very significant injury.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank adjourned sentences until 19 April and asked for social enquiry and restriction of liberty reports.
SENTENCE was also deferred until next month on another case that saw police officers assaulted while in the execution of their duties.
James Gray, of Grostane, Lerwick, admitted throwing a shoe at one police officer and obstructing and hindering officers by violently struggling with two constables at his home address on 17 September last year.
Police attended the house as part of ongoing enquiries into a different and more serious matter that had taken place at the same address.
The 55-year-old also pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards a staff nurse at the Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick on 18 December.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank asked for a social enquiry report and a restriction of liberty assessment and adjourned sentencing until 19 April.
DRIVING without due care on the B9074 road between Scalloway and the Trondra bridge resulted in a first motoring conviction for a 77-year old man from Gulberwick.

Laurance Paton, of Shurton Brae, admitted failing to accelerate to an appropriate speed and repeatedly veering back and forth across the centre of the road on 17 November last year.
Defence solicitor Tommy Allan said his client had been driving for more than 50 years and accepts this his driving on this occasion had not been at the standard it should have been.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank fined him £250 and gave three penalty points.
