Community / Search continues for land for off-road motorcycle testing

THE DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) says it has had no luck so far in its efforts to find a site for off-road motorcycle tests.

In October the UK Government agency issued a call for land for motorbike testing.

However, people can now add their name to a waiting list of vocational off-road vehicle tests – the 3a test – at a new site in Gremista in Lerwick.

The DVSA has secured space at the Anderson Base in the area.

The agency has been without a dedicated test site since being moved on from parking space the old Anderson High School a number of years ago.

It proposed controversial plans to use land at the former Scatsta Airport for tests, which resulted in two local training companies to say they would not use the site due to its location – before being dropped.

In an update provided to Shetland News a DVSA spokesperson said: “Following positive discussions with the local authorised testing facility, candidates can now add their names to a waiting list for vocational off-road tests – known as the 3a test.

“Examiners will then be deployed to conduct the tests as is needed. We will continue providing the on-road part 3b test from our driving test centre in Lerwick.

“As part of our dedication to testing on Shetland, our search for land to conduct off-road motorcycle testing also continues.

“We recently extended our search beyond the current market, which included a call-out to landowners who may have something suitable.”
