THE NEXT Althing debate will discuss the motion ‘Churches for sale – da Kirk is no longer relevant’.

The event will take place on Saturday 21 January at Lerwick Town Hall, with doors opening at 7pm.

The topic harks back to the first ever Althing debate on 11 November 1950, which was ‘Empty pews! Is the church responsible?’

Speakers will include Chris Horrix, Donald Murray and Barbara Dinnage.

It comes as the Church of Scotland continues to sell off much of its estate in Shetland.

The other Althing two debates for this season have been set, and are as follows:

  • Saturday 18 February: Shetland’s dependency on the private car has to end
  • Saturday 18 March: The 1970s – we never had it so good
