Council / Council appoints new finance chief

The SIC’s new head of finance Paul Fraser.

Shetland Islands Council has appointed a new head of finance to replace Jamie Manson who left the local authority to take on the role of finance director at Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd late last year.

Paul Fraser will be starting work for the SIC on Monday.

Fifty two year old Fraser, a chartered accountant, will be joined in Shetland by his wife Karen, three dogs and four cats, all street rescues during his time abroad.  He has three adult children.

Since 2019, Paul has been head of administration and finance with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Pristina, Kosovo.

He led the field finance office of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Jerusalem between 2013-2019.

Earlier in his career he held several senior roles in the UK, including as director of finance with Northern Constabulary between 2003-2008.

He said: “After an extended period abroad I am delighted to be returning to an area that I always enjoyed visiting.

I look forward to working with staff and elected representatives to establish a stable financial position, ensuring high quality services for the future.”

Council chief executive Maggie Sandison said Fraser’s broad and extensive experience makes him an excellent fit for the position.

“Our council and community face difficult times, and I look forward to working closely with him as we deal with the challenges and opportunities ahead,” she said.
