Community / Winter weekend at Sumburgh Head to raise money for defibrillator
PLANS are afoot to install a defibrillator at the southernmost tip of the Shetland mainland at the Sumburgh Head Lighthouse.
A ‘winter weekend’ event is due to take place at the lighthouse and visitor centre on 3 and 4 December to raise funds for the defibrillator.
Over £400 has been raised so far but more is needed.
There is already a significant network of defibrillators located around Shetland, and a map can be found on the Shetland News website.
A defibrillator is a potentially life-saving device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest.
During the fundraising weekend there will be “winter treats” on offer in the cafe, as well as activities such as Christmas crafts, a treasure hunt and a bird trail.
The gift shop will also be open for stocking fillers and festive gifts.
Admission, activities and access to the exhibitions and marine life centre are free but all donations received will go towards a defibrillator at Sumburgh Head.
The lighthouse and visitor centre is not usually open in the winter.
Jane Outram, who manages the site on behalf of the Shetland Amenity Trust, explained: “We have already raised over £400 but have a bit to go before we can purchase and install this vital piece of kit which will be located outside and therefore accessible to the public and community at all times.
“It’s going to be a fun, sociable weekend and we’ve been busy adding some festive decorative touches to the indoor spaces.
“The Sandyburn Singers will be joining us on the Sunday and there will be plenty of crafts, a bird trail, competitions and cake.”
The weekend will take place on 3/4 December from 10am to 3pm.
People can also donate to the defibrillator cause online.
