Community / Cat rehoming service to resume
SHETLAND’s only cat charity will be able to restart its rehoming service after a grant from the Pets at Home Foundation.
Cats Protection Shetland has been active since 1984, but in 2020 its rehoming services had to be put on hold as the pens used to house the cats in its care were no longer fit for purpose.
Fourteen volunteers relaunched the branch in 2021, administering Cats Protection neutering vouchers to more than 100 cats throughout the year and providing advice to the public.
Now, with almost £20,000 donated by the Pets at Home Foundation, they will be able to build two new UPVC pens and start to foster cats once again.
Branch coordinator Emma Moncrieff said: “We’ve worked hard in the last 12 months to support cat owners on the island, but we’ve desperately needed these new pens to make the real impact our community needs.
“We’re really grateful to the Pets at Home Foundation, as the grant they’ve provided will allow us to completely transform the support we can offer to cat owners on the island.
“We’re currently in the process of building the two pens and hope to be able to start taking cats into our care from the end of this year.”
