Sport / Awards celebrate sporting achievements

SHETLAND’s sporting achievement was celebrated at an awards event in Lerwick on Friday night.

Athlete Martin Leyland was named sportsperson of the year at the 2022 Shetland Sports Awards.

Hockey’s Jill Hibbert netted the lifetime endeavour prize whilst the team of the year prize went to Shetland Valkyries.

Footballer George Robesten – who landed a full-time apprenticeship with Ross County – was named young sportsperson of the year.

Coach of the year went to Alba Collins, Shetland Rugby Club received the inclusivity award and volunteer of the year was Sandra Smith.

Shetland Girls Football was named the young team of the year.
