Court / Sentence deferred on man found with nine wraps of heroin
SENTENCE on a Lerwick man who had nine wraps of heroin in his possession and struggled violently with police when they tried to search him has been deferred for reports.
Simon Smith was stopped by police officers after they saw him in suspicious circumstances on the town’s King Harald Street on 14 April.
But before they could speak to him, he ran away, and when police officers managed to catch up with him again he struggled violently with them – ending up with one officer sustaining a hand injury.
At Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday the 50-year-old admitted possession of the Class A drug and obstructing officers while they were exercising their powers.
A not guilty plea to a charge of being involved in the supply of heroin was accepted by the Crown.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said Smith, of Water Lane, had nine wraps on him, weighing between 0.13 and 0.16 grams and each worth about £20.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank deferred sentence until 19 January next year for a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty assessment to be prepared.
