Local Government By-Election 2022 (Shetland West) / Zara Pennington
Name: Zara Pennington Electoral Ward: Shetland West
Hi I’m Zara Pennington
I’m standing again because I want to see real change in Westside. We need improvements in, housing availability and energy efficiency, transportation, and local employment prospects.
I have spent many years working with, and contributing to, our communities and have first-hand knowledge of the issues we face through my work in Social Care, Health and Education administration, three of our most vital public services. This includes the significant impact that the lack of affordable housing is on staff recruitment.
We require new homes that are affordable to rent and heat. It is possible to have warmer homes and a cooler planet, and we need to start with the Council’s own housing stock.
The Reawick exchange, and others, still need to be upgraded to fibre as a priority. There has been no progress since May. It’s time for BT Open Reach to provide a timescale for this work.
Upgrading the A971 between Walls and the West Burrafirth junction would improve safety and reduce travel time. I would work with the Roads Department to find a solution.
We need bus service that meets the needs of our communities, it is vital that people can access services without a car, this is not a reality for too many in our communities. It’s time to tackle this source of social exclusion.
Investment in fixed links remain essential for supporting long term growth in the North Isles and this can only be delivered by building a closer relationship with the Scottish Government.
If elected, I will use all my skills, experience and resources to help build a greener, fairer and more prosperous future for everyone in Shetland.
It would be a privilege to represent the Westside and I ask you to please vote for me so I can work for you.
Kind regards
Zara Pennington
