Community / Small grants scheme open for applications

SMALL community groups in Shetland can bid for grants of up to £5,000 from a Shetland Charitable Trust funding scheme which is accepting applications over the next few months.

The trust has brought forward its small grant scheme to give groups more time to apply for a share of the £100,000 fund before the Christmas and New Year period.

Last year, 15 charities benefited from the scheme, covering a wide range of community projects.

The new application period is open now and runs until 26 January.

In line with all the trust’s grant aid, the small grant scheme is intended to help reduce inequality and social exclusion in island life.

Awards can cover up to 75 per cent of a project’s costs. The scheme is open to constituted community groups with a turnover of less than £50,000 a year, operating in social care and welfare, arts and culture, heritage and the environment or sport and recreation.

Charitable trust chair Dr Andrew Cooper said: “This is the third year that we’ve had a bigger budget for this scheme.

“We hope small groups will use it to help provide extra services or to meet their day-to-day challenges.”

The trust also runs a main grant scheme for larger charitable organisations, which is paying out £8.6 million this year to 29 local projects and organisations. In addition, a capital grants scheme is providing £6.8 million this year for major repairs and upgrades to large community buildings throughout Shetland.

Application forms and further details about the small grant scheme are available on the trust’s website.
