Court / Court round-up 31 August 2022
THE SENTENCING of a man from Glasgow who admitted driving while almost four times the legal alcohol limit has been deferred for reports and a personal appearance at court.
Paul Hughes, with an address of Scaraway Drive, also pleaded guilty to charges of driving on a provisional licence with no insurance, and taking the vehicle without consent.
The incident took place on 8 May on the public roads between the Sella Ness accommodation camp and Brae.
The 31-year-old was stopped and arrested at the Co-op carpark in Brae. He was “clearly under the influence”, procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie told Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank adjourned sentence until 12 October to allow time for reports to be prepared.
Hughes has also been ordered to travel to Shetland for his next court appearance and has been disqualified in the interim.
OVERLOADING a pick-up by more than 750 kilos cost a Lerwick man £400 when his case called at the town’s sheriff court on Wednesday.
Przemyslaw Sepot, of Bruce Crescent, was spotted by police officers when driving along South Road on 6 June.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie told the court that the vehicle had been clearly overloaded.
ENTERING a home uninvited and assaulting the householder by striking him on the head resulted in a £300 fine for a Lerwick man.
Craig Nelson, of Staneyhill, admitted two charges when he appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
Defence solicitor Tommy Allan said his client had largely turned around his life and described the incident as a “lapse”.
“It’s an incident that he regrets,” he said, adding that the 43-year-old has stayed away from the address since.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank admonished Nelson on the charge of threatening or abusive behaviour and fined him £300 plus a £20 victim surcharge for the assault.
