Court / Man fined for pub assault
A MAN from Glasgow who launched an unprovoked attack on a fellow pub-goer in Brae has fined and ordered to pay compensation to the victim.
Harry Rennie, of Ballantay Road, appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday to admit carrying out the assault at the Mid Brae Inn on 1 May.
The 29-year-old butted the man on the head, knocking him to the ground, where he then repeatedly punched him on the head, all to his injury.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the incident happened in the pub at around 9.45pm, with the complainer there with friends.
“The accused was sitting nearby,” he said. “He then got up and for some reason kicked his trainers off.”
The court heard that Rennie then “launched an unprovoked attack on the complainer”.
Mackenzie described it as “quite a vicious attack” which left the man with a bloodied nose, with Rennie having to be pulled off by other people in the pub.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank fined Rennie £500 for the assault and ordered him to pay a further £300 in compensation to his victim.
On top of this he was also told to pay £40 as a victim surcharge fee.
