A FIFTY seven kilometre stretch of subsea interconnector cable is due to be laid from Weisdale Voe from March onwards.

As previously reported, the first piece of the Shetland transmission link has started being laid off the coast of Caithness.

Developer SSEN Transmission said this cable will run for around 100km. The second phase will see cable installed at the Shetland end, with a third taking place later in 2023 to connect both sections.

The project will connect Shetland to the national grid and allow large wind farms to export energy.

MEANWHILE SSE Renewables and the Viking Wind Farm project has donated a total of £2,500 to Whitedale Football Club which will fund 43 training shirts for the senior team.

Team manager Craig Nicolson gave a “massive thanks” to the wind farm developer for its support.

TWO delegates from Shetland Island Games Association have headed to Guernsey to preview plans for the 2023 games.

The next Island Games will take place from 8-14 July 2023.

They will include a programme of fourteen sports: archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, cycling, football, golf, indoor bowls, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis and triathlon.

Team Shetland’s Lesley Hutchison said: “After the postponement of the 2021 games, we’re looking forward to 2023 and to hear from the Guernsey organising committee on their plans.”

A TEMPORARY 20mph speed limit will be in place on the Burra Bridge from Monday (11 July) to allow for maintenance painting and replacement of parapet bolts.

The work is being carried out by Malakoff Ltd.
