Business / Cocktail bar and new name in the pipeline for Da Wheel

The venue will continue as a bar and nightclub – but a revamped downstairs area will focus on cocktails

LERWICK pub and nightclub Da Wheel is set to reopen under a new name this summer – complete with a cocktail bar on its ground floor.

A nightclub will still feature upstairs at weekends, and if things go well the bar there could open during the week too.

It was announced earlier this month that the bar and nightclub had changed hands.

The driving force behind the new venture is Riddi Maya Limbu, who is involved in Lerwick restaurant and takeaway Saffron.

She told Shetland News that the venue will go under the name of Trench Bar and Nightclub.

Renovations are underway and the building is closed in the meantime – meaning there is currently no nightclub in Shetland.

But when it reopens punters will be greeted with a cocktail bar on the ground floor instead of a pub – open during the week – which Limbu hopes will attract folk in for a relaxing drink and a new experience in Shetland.

On the floor above the nightclub will continue, and the upstairs bar there could open during the week too if things are a success.

“We are hoping – if everything goes to plan – to open mid-July, that’s the timescale,” Limbu said.

“There’s a lot of work to do still.”

Limbu said the hope is to use the downstairs to attract people aged over 25 to the venue.

She said there is a plan to offer a different range of drinks too.

Looking to the future, Limbu said she might look into hosting live music or other kinds of entertainment.

With the venue continuing as a bar and nightclub, she stressed there is no truth to rumours that a restaurant will open up in Da Wheel.
