TEAMS working for the various partners involved in the decommissioning of the Ninian Northern jacket are preparing the next phase in the operation after the 8,500 tonne steel structure was successfully moved from the Pioneering Spirit to the barge Iron Lady on Friday.

Mooring the barge at the Dales Voe quay, to be followed the load-in of the jacket from the barge to the quay, is likely to take several days to complete.

Shetland manager of logistics firm Peterson, Daniel Gear, said the focus of all parties on site is delivering a safe operation.

“It’s fair to say that our team are enjoying the challenge of working on this project. They have a lot of experience in this kind of work, but it’s safe to say that this particular project isn’t like your typical day at the office,” he said.

Once ashore the jacket will be dismantled and recycled by specialist teams working for the Peterson/Veolia decommissioning partnership.

Pioneering Spirit, the world’s biggest offshore construction vessel, will remain in Dales Voe until next week, to undertake preparatory works onboard for her next project.
