ISLANDERS are being asked to plan well ahead when venturing out today (Friday) as Storm Arwen makes her presence felt. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warnings for wind today and for snow and ice on Saturday.
Inter-island ferry services on Yell Sound, Bluemull and Bressay Sound have been cancelled due to the deteriorating weather conditions. The Whalsay service has been reduced to one vessel. Ferry services across Yell and Bluemull Sound resumed again late on Friday afternoon.
NorthLink has now cancelled all passenger and freight services for tonight. All flights in and out of Sumburgh have also been cancelled.
Shetland Islands Council said that Foula and Fair Isle primary schools didn’t open today. Meanwhile, Ollaberry Primary School will be closing at 1pm as will he Eric Gray @Seafield centre.
Meanwhile, NHS Shetland has taken the decision to close the vaccination clinic at the Gilbertson Park from 2pm onwards due to the weather conditions. Appointments will be rescheduled.

Meanwhile, a rare red weather warning has been filed by the Met Office for the east coast of the UK from Fraserburgh in the north to Newcastle and Durham in the south.
