Health / More businesses encouraged to sign up to breastfeeding support scheme
MORE local businesses are being encouraged to sign up for a scheme which shows support for breastfeeding mothers.
The Shetland Family Centre recently signed up to the Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland scheme, which is being implemented locally by NHS Shetland.
The national scheme’s aim is to ensure breastfeeding mums know that if they see the sticker the establishment will make them feel welcome and be supportive of her feeding choice.
It also raises awareness of the Breastfeeding etc. (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Equality Act 2010, and ensures that organisations are aware of their responsibilities under this legislation.
A spokesperson for NHS Shetland said breastfeeding is “incredibly important to the health of both mother and baby, yet Scotland has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in Europe”.
While many new mothers start breastfeeding, some may stop within a short period of time. This is often because they feel there is a lack of support, particularly when they want to feed their baby outside their home.
The Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland Scheme allows businesses to show their support for breastfeeding mothers and know they are making a “positive contribution to the health and wellbeing of Scotland’s families and children”.
“We’re encouraging more businesses across Shetland to join this free scheme and sign up to become a member,” NHS Shetland said.

The Shetland Family Centre on Lerwick’s Burgh Road offers mothers looking for a quiet place to breastfeed their baby from 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday, but people are encouraged to phone ahead when possible on 01595 745400.
The centre also hosts the Breastfeeding Shetland Support Group on Fridays. For more information on this, contact Susan Keay, NHS Shetland’s infant feeding lead, on susan.keay@nhs.scot.
