MORE THAN 800 racing pigeons from all over the UK were successfully released from Lerwick on Sunday morning after a two day wait due to misty weather conditions.

Steven Adamson from Dorset had arrived in Shetland with a truck full of racing pigeons on Thursday hoping to release the 843 birds on Friday morning to compete in Race 9 of the British International Championships.

However, it was too foggy for the birds to fly, and the race had to be postponed.

The club reported on its website that the birds had been “liberated” successfully and were on their way to their home loft.

The flight path over the sea to Scotland is under blue skies all the way, the club said, and the forecast for the UK mainland for dry weather with light winds.
