Letters / No need for major industrialisation
Sustainable Shetland gets a lot of criticism for efforts to stop the Viking Energy project which is fast becoming an economic and ecological disaster for Shetland and its people, given the local council’s aspiration to become a global energy hub via the much touted ‘Orion’ project.
One can’t help wondering why it was deemed necessary to sacrifice the central mainland in order to justify this.
There are many ways in which 21st century tech and innovation could power our islands sustainably without such major industrialisation; for example a tidal causeway linking Bressay and Lerwick would provide power and room for future expansion and employment.
I’m sure the Scottish Government and it’s representative in Shetland would welcome the benefits this could bring.
