Regarding the branding of Shetland as a place of opportunity, designed to welcome new families, perhaps Neil Grant’s comments that this needs to be “honest” relates to the lack of opportunity afforded to women and girls in Lerwick’s fire festivals.

Additionally, he may have been voicing concern that the ongoing infatuation with post-Wir Shetland, Shettish, Shetland for the Shets, Shetland exceptionalism amongst some local political leaders, feeds a version of Shetland identity that is far more insular than inclusive.
Opportunities to become disillusioned with the actual welcome await new Shetlanders aplenty.
