Election letters 2019 / ‘Wonderful campaign’
Wow! What a month it’s been.
This by-election came as a surprise to pretty much all of us, and the SNP came into it as underdogs.
But the tide has turned in Shetland. And that’s why I’m so proud of all the hard work put in by staff, volunteers and, of course, our candidate Tom Wills.
As this wonderful campaign comes to a close, there are a few folk we must pay tribute to.
Thank you to all of the staff and volunteers who descended onto the islands, visiting places from Fair Isle to Fetlar and Sandwick to Symbister.
It was a pleasure to have so many friendly faces to greet each day – many of whom were on their first visit to Shetland, and have assured me it won’t be their last.
Every member of staff and every volunteer in our hub on Commercial Street have all been so brilliantly hard-working.
I also want to thank all the businesses and organisations who were so accommodating to those MSPs, MPs, ministers and first ministers who came to stay, and those who wanted to visit.
It’s been an absolute pleasure to have played even a small part in such a forward-looking, upbeat and inclusive campaign.
And on behalf of all the SNP, I want to thank the people of Shetland. So many of the responses on the doors have been positive and constructive. Without doubt, there’s been a real sense that Shetland is ready for change.
No matter what happens tomorrow – I can’t wait for next time.
