Election / Ten candidates vie to succeed Tavish
A RECORD number of ten candidates have put their names forward to contest the forthcoming by-election triggered by the resignation of Shetland MSP Tavish Scott.
As nominations closed on Friday afternoon, two more candidates than had previously announced their intention to stand appeared on the Notice of Poll published by Shetland Islands Council.
They are former Lerwick councillor and SIC deputy political leader Michael Stout and Walls man Peter Tait; both standing as independent candidates.
They join Johan Adamson (Labour), Brydon Goodlad (Scottish Conservatives), Stuart Martin (UKIP), Debra Nicolson (Scottish Greens), Ian Scott (Independent, Ryan Thomson (Independent), Tom Wills (SNP) and Beatrice Wishart (Liberal Democrats).
The by-election for the Shetland Islands constituency will take place on 29 August. There will be 37 polling station across the isles and voting will take place, as always between 7am and 10pm.
Following the count at the Clickimin Leisure Centre the result of this by-election is expected in the early hours of Friday 30 August.
