News / NSPCC completes tour of local primary schools
CHILDREN’s charity NSPCC has been in Shetland this week to complete its tour of every primary school in the isles.
The organisation took its Speak Out Stay Safe campaign to Whalsay, Whiteness, Nesting, Fetlar, Fair Isle and Cullivoe.
Staff were joined by the charity’s mascot Buddy The Speech Bubble to highlight to children the importance of speaking to a trusted adult or Childline about issues including abuse, neglect or bullying.
Whalsay School headteacher Garry Spence said: “The special assemblies delivered an important message to our pupils about what to do and who to speak to if they ever find themselves in a situation where someone is causing them harm.
“The commitment of the NSPCC to children wherever they are in the UK is seen in the fact that, with the visit to our school, they have visited every school in Shetland.”
Heather Whyte, NSPCC Scotland schools service coordinator for North East and Shetland, added: “Our visit to the Shetland Isles demonstrates our charity’s commitment to fight for every childhood, regardless of geography or distance.
“It’s such a vital service for young people and we were determined to make sure we could bring it to every primary school in the area. We greatly appreciate the support of Shetland Islands Council and look forward to that partnership continuing in the future.”
