News / Remanded after assault

A LERWICK man who assaulted his former partner while on bail has been remanded in custody.

Thirty two year old Simon Cooper, of Hoofields, admitted to assaulting the woman at the Viking Bus Station on Saturday when appearing from custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Monday.

Defence agent Tommy Allan asked for his client to be given his liberty until the 15 August when he is due to appear again, to give him time to see his children.

The solicitor added that Cooper was well aware that he is facing a custodial sentence, adding that his client was willing to accept any condition to fulfil his commitment to see his family.

However Sheriff Ian Cruickshank remanded Cooper in custody until his next court appearance.

On hearing the sheriff’s decision Cooper became very agitated and swore at both the sheriff and the procurator fiscal before being led from the dock.
