News / Man punished for threatening behaviour

A MAN from Lerwick who shouted and swore at his partner and threw her mobile phone against a wall the day before he was sent to prison on another matter has had two months added to his jail sentence.

Michael Holmes, of Gilbertson Road, will see his sentence run side by side with his existing sentence, instead of it prolonging his stay behind bars.

The 34-year-old appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court from custody on Wednesday after previously admitting behaving in a threatening or abusive manner at the town’s Cairnfield Road on 19 June, while on bail.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said Holmes turned up to his partner’s home and started looking through her phone’s messages when she was in the shower.

The fiscal said the man thought the messages showed she was being “unfaithful” – leading Holmes to argue with the woman and causing the phone to break.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said his client was “extremely upset” and stressed at the time as he knew he would likely be going to prison the next day.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank said Holmes’ eventual release date from prison would not be altered as the two-month sentence is concurrent.
