News / Yell church for sale

A RARE opportunity has opened up to buy the Mid Yell church.

The Church of Scotland building and its adjoining hall has a price tag of around £35,000.

The church was closed last year after repair bills became too costly to justify keeping it open in light of its modest attendance figures.

It was built in 1832 and the church and hall are both grade C listed buildings.

The church is as it was left, with wooden pews and gallery areas.

Church of Scotland said there is scope for renovation to a “residential, commercial or light industrial property”.

A spokeswoman said: “The church in Yell was closed in May 2017 and after much thought and discussion has now been offered for sale.

“It is always a difficult decision to close a church but in this case the small size of the congregation and the scale of repair and modernisation needed made the building unsustainable.”

Earlier this year the Uyeasound kirk in Unst also closed its doors after a vote from members.
