News / Lights out on Skerries
ISLANDERS in Skerries were without power for almost 12 hours during the weekend after one of the overhead lines on the small island came down.
Fifty nine customers were affected when electricity went off at around 4am on Sunday morning, at the end of the Eela fishing competition weekend which saw many people visiting the island.
Engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) made it to the island off the northeast of Shetland on Sunday morning to investigate the fault and reconnect customers.
A spokesman said that by midday on Sunday, 34 of those affected were reconnected with the remaining having had their power restored by 2.45pm.
He added that the company’s investigation into what caused the power line to come down was ongoing as there was no obvious sign of damage to the overhead line.
“We would like to apologise to our customers on Skerries who were affected by this power cut, and assure them that our engineers did everything they could to restore their supplies as safely and as quickly as possible,” he said.
