News / Disqualified for drink driving

A MAN who was caught driving over the drink limit and with no insurance has been banned from driving for a year.

Police breathalysed 26 year old Jack Johnson, of Hagell, Wormadale, on Lerwick’s North Road after a check revealed his car had no insurance and they smelled alcohol on his breath.

Johnson admitted the offences, which took place on 27 May, “at the earliest opportunity”, according to defence agent Tommy Allan.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie told Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday that Johnson had failed the procedure at the police station after his initial roadside test. He had 37 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood – the legal limit being 22 microgrammes.

Allan said that his client was “extremely sorry” for his actions and understood that he had put himself and others at risk. He had also moved into the town in order to keep his job.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank fined Johnson £400 and disqualified him for a year for the drink driving offence, with the opportunity to reduce that term if he completed a drink driving rehabilitation course.

He also fined him £200 for driving with no insurance and ordered his licence to be endorsed.
