News / More gas drilling out West

Glendaroch is located close to the Edradour and Glenlivit gas fields.

FRENCH oil and gas company Total is about to commence the drilling of a new gas prospect to the West of Shetland which if successful will feed into the Shetland Gas Plant.

Total said they had signed a contract with Stena Drilling to explore the Glendaroch prospect, which is situated close to the Edradour/Glenlivet gas fields.

Terminal manager Dave Wink said: “If the well is positive and has sufficient reserves, the plan would involve a potential tieback to the existing Edradour manifold as early as next year.”

The plant already processes gas from four fields West of Shetland after Edradour and Glenlivet were added successfully in summer of last year.

The early completion and start-up of Edradour/Glenlivet has helped West of Shetland record an exceptional performance in the second half of 2017 and early 2018.

Wink added that the company has also applied for new exploration acreage West of Shetland.

“If successful in this application Total would target a new prospect from these new leases as early as 2019,” he said.

“Total’s strategy is now to maximise the benefits of the Shetland Gas Plant by focusing on discovering and bringing more gas on stream to sustain high levels of production.”
