News / Swedish folk act to return

SWEDISH folk act Väsen are set to return to Shetland next week for a gig at Mareel.

The trio, who are known for rearranging traditional tunes as well as drawing influence from rock, jazz and classical music, will perform at the venue on 20 April.

Väsen trio Olov Johansson, Mikael Marin and Roger Tallroth last performed in Shetland back in 2010 at the folk festival.

The band – who have released 18 albums to since their debut effort in 1990 – bring together a five-string viola, a 12-string guitar and a nyckelharpa, which is a keyed fiddle.

The Swedes have also performed with renowned jazz collective Snarky Puppy, recording a tune for their 2016 collaborations album Family Dinner – Volume 2, while Punch Brothers have also covered one of their songs.

Tickets for Väsen at Mareel are available from the Shetland Arts box office.
