News / Fined for taking neighbour’s car
A MAN from Gott who took his neighbour’s car without their consent to go to the shops has been fined £500 and given six penalty points.
Shaun Chapman, of Herrisdale Park, previously admitted taking the car from an address at Herrislea Court in Tingwall on 30 September.
The 49 year old pleaded guilty to driving the car on the A970 at the Brig o’ Fitch with a provisional licence but without a qualified driver or L plates.
He also admitted driving an unlicensed car with no test certificate while uninsured.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie told Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday that the neighbour fell asleep during a visit from Chapman.
He then decided to go to a shop and took their car keys before setting off.
Mackenzie said the offence came to light when the police stopped the car for routine purposes.
Representing himself, Chapman said the charges spoke for themselves. “It is what it is,” he said.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank fined him for three of the charges but admonished him on driving with a provisional licence and without a test certificate.
