News / Once in a blue moon
THE SKY cleared sufficiently overnight from Wednesday to Thursday to allow the second full moon of the month of January to be seen from Lerwick.
A blue moon occurs when there are two full moons in one month.
This rare event will repeat again in March this year, while there will be no full moon in February.
Last night’s full moon was also a supermoon as it appeared seven per cent bigger and around 14 per cent brighter due to its closeness to planet Earth.
