News / Efforts to improve condition of Quarff war memorial underway
A PUBLIC meeting to discuss repositioning of the Quarff War Memorial, currently built into the wall of the district’s derelict church, is to be held later this month.
Several people have expressed concern about both the state of the memorial and where it is situated, and it has been suggested it may be moved to a more suitable site away from the church building but still within the kirk yard.
The meeting will take place at 7pm on Monday 22 January in Quarff Hall to discuss these matters, elect a committee and look at a constitution enabling funding options to be explored.
The Shetland branch of the Royal British Legion has been advised of the idea and asked for any guidance it may have as one of the main stakeholders who should be consulted in matters relating to war memorials.
It is also hoped that a community-led initiative on the war memorial may also include upgrading of the road and car park leading to the cemetery.
Local resident Robbie McGregor, who is also an SIC councillor, said: “It is hoped that this meeting will result in the memorial being repositioned at an appropriate place in the kirk yard and restored to a proper and fitting memory to the names on the tablet.”
There are seven names listed on the memorial plaque in loving memory of those belonging to the area who sacrificed their lives during World War Two. They are: Andrew Davidson (Black Watch), William Johnson (Royal Artillery), Alexander Malcolmson (HMS Hood), Alexander Manson, William Nicolson, John Tait and Thomas Tait (all Merchant Navy).
