TWO adjoining houses in Firth have been converted into four one-bedroom flats by Shetland Islands Council to cater for the demand for smaller sized properties in the isles.

The flats at 24 and 25 Leaside will be open between midday and 2pm on Friday for viewing before being allocated to tenants.

There are currently 578 applications on the council’s housing register and the majority of people are looking for smaller sized housing.

Shetland North councillor and Delting Community Council chairman Alastair Cooper said the conversion should provide a boost to people wanting to move into the area.

“I’m really pleased that the council is able to provide these converted flats here in Leaside, allowing individuals and couples more of a chance of being housed in the Firth and Mossbank community,” he said.

“The council is committed to make more affordable housing available for rent, so that we can continue to reduce the pressure on our housing waiting lists.”
