News / Funding secured to explore Scalloway’s future
WORKSHOPS are set to be held in the spring to gather residents’ thoughts on how Scalloway could be developed in the future.
Shetland Islands Council has secured £15,000 in funding from the Scottish Government for the project, which ultimately aims to see a pilot ‘local place plan’ devised for the village.
It is one of 19 projects which has been given a share of over £300,000 as part of the Making Places Initiative, which is designed to “support events that bring local people together with design professionals to identify how their places and communities can be improved”.
The funding will be used to hold workshops with people living in Scalloway to gather their views on where improvements could be made in the village.
Planning manager Iain McDiarmid said this could include identifying land which could be developed.
“This initiative provides an exciting opportunity for the residents of Scalloway to plan the future vision of their village,” he said.
“The funding will be used for community-led workshops in spring 2018, to obtain a wide range of views from as many people as possible.
“The aim is to create an action plan that will help identify improvement opportunities and land for development, with the outcome being a pilot ‘local place plan’ for Scalloway.”
The Scottish Government’s minister for local government Kevin Stewart added: “I am pleased we received so many applications from a mixture of local authorities and community groups, keen to get local people involved in plans to improve their area.
“This scheme and every project supported by it creates more opportunities for communities to choose what works for them.”
