News / Films from Germany
MAREEL is one of eight cinemas across Scotland participating in a festival celebrating German movies past and present.
The festival Fokus: Films from Germany will open later this month when Maria Schrader’s 2016 film Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe is screened in Edinburgh’s Filmhouse on 23 November.
Mareel will be showing two of the programme’s movies: The Culpable on 26 and 29 November, and House Without Roof on 3 and 6 December.
The Culpable portrays three friends connected through their careers in the clergy when one of them is arrested on suspicion of having abused minors.
In House Without Roof three siblings travel from Stuttgart to Iraq to honour their late mother’s wish to be buried next to their father in a Kurdish village.
Mareel’s cinema programmer Jenny Leask said: “We’re delighted to be taking part in Fokus for the first time this year.
“Since it began, the festival has presented a consistently strong programme of excellent, thought-provoking films, many of which wouldn’t otherwise be available to screen.
“We feel sure that the two films we’ve chosen to show in our Screen Horizons strand will appeal to Shetland audiences.”
Meanwhile, Shetland Arts is also participating in the Into Film Festival 2017, next week, which will see screenings of The Gruffalo with a Scots-language reading from Education Scotland at local schools.
