News / Fire brigade called out due to smoke from nursery’s heater
THE EMERGENCY services were called out to the Hame Fae Hame nursery in Scalloway on Tuesday morning after smoke from a storage heater set off the building’s fire alarm.
Nursery owner Kaye Sandison said that a “tiny bit of plastic” appeared to have been put through the grill of the heater by one of the children on Monday, and it had melted and set off the alarm when the heating system came on the following day.
The fire brigade were called out at 8.45am and the building was evacuated. Sandison praised the speed with which firefighters had responded and said everyone was able to return to the building by 10am.
Children and staff had been in another room having breakfast, and no one was harmed during the incident.
Shetland Islands Council, which owns the former Scalloway Junior High School buildings now jointly occupied by the nursery and a health centre, has removed the heater.
While it hadn’t been an ideal start to the day, she said the incident showed how worthwhile regular fire drills were.
“Everything went very much to plan, we evacuated the building really quickly,” Sandison added.
