News / Tracey to coordinate knitting
SHETLANDPEERIEMAKKERS, the project that encourages children to learn hand knitting has appointed a part-time co-coordinator.
Tracey Hawkins has worked in, and managed, various community-related projects over recent years.
The mother of two describes the initiative that now supports eight young knitting groups throughout Shetland as “incredibly worthwhile”.
Hawkins said she was “amazed” to see the impact the project is already having on participants and communities.
“It’s a very social thing too and is mutually beneficial to both the children and tutors alike. It’s not just about knitting and developing our culture.
“These are skills they can use throughout their lives, plus it’s a fun, friendly and social too.”
ShetlandPeerieMakkers was formed by Pierre Cambillard in 2014 in response to knitting tuition being withdrawn from the school curriculum.
Hawkins’ post is part funded through the LEADER programme, an EU initiative, with the balance having been provided by a major private sponsor.
